Assessment of Vehicle Maintenance Culture and Its CostEffectiveness: The Case of the University for Development Studies

The University for Development Studies is a public university in Ghana that owns and manages fleet of vehicles. university, however, faces numerous challenges terms maintaining its Reports from the various campuses indicate most vehicles broke down were at mechanic shops needed urgent attention. In order to propose solutions university's problems, study sought discover causes vehicles' frequent breakdowns, why left unattended shops, cost vehicle maintenance was so high. population comprised 55 30 drivers who use offices, directorates, pool (general usage) Central Administration. However, data on 34 available study, which far more than representation. Ten sampled participate using simple random sampling approach. Face-to-face interviews one-on-one correspondence conducted with selected sample (drivers). researchers used open-ended questions gather relevant respondents. secondary obtained mechanics technicians presented their bills payment Transport Office University. Both qualitative quantitative methods analyzing collected. analyzed grounded theory Excel sheets. revealed issues such as breakdowns went high costs result poor culture, insufficient funding, delays release funds maintenance, inflation spare parts, substandard materials, age vehicle, knowledge skills technicians. It therefore recommended formalized department be established within sufficiently equipped tools parts. should staffed well-qualified experienced requisite practical maintenance. This will allow fast quick responses issues.
